チャイルド教授の残したその他のバリアント

　次は、１８１０年において記録されていたバリアントである「The Cambric Shirt(キャンブリック・シャツ）」の歌詞を取り上げます。キャンブリックとは、亜麻糸・綿糸で織った薄地の平織物で、主にハンカチに用いられたりする繊維のことです。下の歌詞を見てみると、サイモン＆ガーファンクルの「スカボローフェア」と同じような歌詞がすでにこの１８１０年に用いられていた事が分かります（下の赤い太字部分）。ちなみに「Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme（パセリ、セージ、ローズマリー、タイム）」はすべてハーブの名前を指しています。

　チャイルド教授の収集したバリアントの中で、最後に注目したいのは、この「Child #2K」の「Acres of land（１エーカーの土地）」です。この歌詞は「Child #2A」でも登場していましたが、後になってこの部分だけ切り取られた形でバリアントとして成長していったようです（下の歌詞を良く見ると３エーカーになっています）。このバージョンについては、今日においてもいくつかのアーティストによってＣＤ化されているようです（次ページ以降でご紹介します）。

ポールサイモンと「スカボローフェア」の出会い

　歌詞・メロディー共に様々なバリエーションが存在する「エルフィンナイト」ですが、１９６０年代のイギリスにおけるフォークリバイバルブームの中で、ある有名フォークソングシンガーがこの「エルフィンナイト（もしくはそのバリアント）」を「スカボローフェア」という曲にアレンジしていました。彼の元を訪れていたポールサイモンはその曲を聴いて・・・次のページへ続きます。
