解説

　1812年に始まった米英戦争で、詩人・弁護士のフランシス・スコット・キーは1814年（当時35歳）、英国艦隊による激しい夜間砲撃を耐え抜いた星条旗を目にする。彼はこの体験を元に「マクヘンリー砦の防衛」という詩を書き上げた。この彼の詩が、当時人気のあった酒飲み歌「天国のアナクレオンへ（To Anacreon in Heaven）」のメロディーにあてられ、1931年3月3日にアメリカ合衆国の国歌に正式に採用された。国旗の紅白１３州は、独立宣言時の１３州を表す（写真：ホワイトハウス／出典：Wikipedia）。
