女性シンガーソングライターが編集

スコットランドの女性シンガーソングライター、ケネディ-マージョリー・フレイザー（Marjory Kennedy-Fraser/1857–1930）は、1917年にヘブリディーズ諸島周辺を訪れ、現地の民謡や大衆歌を採集した。

その後、彼女自身がアレンジを加えてまとめた歌集「ヘブリディーズ諸島の歌 Songs of the Hebrides」が出版され、『The Road to the Isles』も同歌集に収録された。

バグパイプやマーチングバンドなどで演奏されるほか、フォークダンスの曲としても使用される機会があるようだ。

なお、歌詞付きの曲として歌唱入りの動画がYouTubeなどで確認できたが、その歌詞が編者のケネディ-マージョリー・フレイザー自身によるものなのか、他の詩人によるものなのかについては不明。

ヘブリディーズ諸島とは？

『The Road to the Isles』が採集されたヘブリディーズ諸島とは、大小100以上の島々からなるスコットランド北西部の島嶼部（とうしょうぶ）。

スコットランド本土に近い群島はインナー・ヘブリディーズ、西側の縁の島々はアウター・ヘブリディーズまたはウェスタン・アイルズ（Western Isles）と呼ばれている。

19世紀ドイツの音楽家メンデルスゾーンはヘブリディーズ諸島を訪れ、無人島のスタファ島にあるフィンガルの洞窟の光景にインスピレーションを受け、1830年に演奏会用序曲『フィンガルの洞窟』を作曲している。
