About Anthem

Kimi ga Yo (君が代, Kimi ga Yo) (often translated as "Imperial Reign") is Japan's National Anthem, and is also one of the world's shortest national anthems in current use. The lyrics are based on a Waka poem written in the Heian Period, sung to a melody written in the later Meiji Era.

Although Kimi ga Yo has long been Japan's de facto national anthem, it was only legally recognized as such in 1999 with the passing of the Law Concerning the National Flag and Anthem (photo: Mount Fuji /source: Wikipedia).

Lyrics and Translation

君が代は
千代に八千代に
さざれ石の
巌となりて
苔のむすまで

May Thy peaceful reign last long!
May it last for thousands of years!
Until this tiny stone will grow
into a massive rock
And the moss will cover it all
deep and thick.
